What we teach
Hebrew words, songs and giving, learned by doing
Kitbag is a Jewish community camp run by a congregation's camp committee. We teach through games, cooking, song and projects, and we leave the long lessons to the school year.
Hebrew words at play
Each week has a handful of Hebrew words that come up in games, songs and snack time, so campers hear them in use and not in a drill.
Songs and the Friday gathering
Campers learn the week's songs and sing them at the Friday gathering, with challah they baked that morning.
Giving week
In Week 5 campers plan and make something to give away, sort donations for a food pantry and write notes to neighbors.
Holidays and stories
Through the summer we tell the stories behind the holidays that fall in summer, and close camp for Tisha B'Av.
Every background
What a child from another background can expect
Families of every background and level of observance come to camp. Campers join the songs and the Friday gathering as much as they like, and a camper who would rather listen can listen. Nobody is asked to pray, nobody is asked what the family believes, and the food rule is the one rule every camper follows, so that every lunch can be shared.
